Dogwood Village residents and staff enjoyed a very special visit on March 5th from Melissa Shapiro, DVM a veterinarian and lifetime animal welfare advocate. Melissa wrote a book about fostering a tiny deaf blind puppy, Piglet, rescued from a hoarding situation. She nurtured him until the rescue group could find his forever home and finally decided to keep him in her home.
This experience changed Melissa and her family’s lives forever as the family rallied around Piglet to help him settle into his new environment. Piglet was trained, loved, and offered care with compassion as his extraordinary spirit emerged. Melissa was inspired by the relationship, wrote a book about Piglet, and formed a non-profit, Piglet International Inc. to assist animals who need to be rescued.
